Pacific PassageMaker Autumn - Winter 2013 On Sale

See our Media Kit

Subscribe nowCOVER STORY: The all new Alaska 49 Aft Cabin yachtfisher transcends the normal cruising motoryacht with a split personality that presents an extremely versatile vessel. While aft cabin boats generally aren't the flavour of the month with dedicated fishos, this boat is the exception with the perfect fishing cockpit located just above the water level against the transom. A second deck above the aft cabin gives the perfect perspective for elevated socializing - simply genius.

Radar made easy: Radar is considered a very vital piece of equipment for a boat that is going offshore or serious coastal cruising. While it may not be the electronic equipment of choice for smaller boats and those content to do their boating in sheltered rivers and lakes, radars have come of age and are now almost standard kit on boats over 10m.

Unsailboat: At a time when many designers and yards are finding it tough going to secure contracts and orders, the alliance between Whangarei-based Circa Marine and US designer Steve Dashew, formed in 2005 with the building of Dashew’s FPB (functional power boat) 83 ‘wind horse’, bucks the trend. Dashew explains the reasons behind his radical FPB ‘unsailboat’ boat design And looks into some of the more technical aspects of these very different ocean-capable vessels.

Heavy Weather Handling: In harbour your problems tend to be those of handling the boat in close proximity to other boats and harbour installations. Out at sea you will come up against a whole range of different conditions to those in harbour and there are many new techniques to learn. It is wonderful to leave the harbour for the freedom of the open sea, but the first thing you notice out there is that the surface of the water is usually far from calm.

Sounds of silence: Practically speaking, noise is any sound that is considered excessive and annoying. Technically, it is a pressure wave as detected by the ear. However, for a boat owner noise, or more especially too much of it, is simply unacceptable.

Turning 40: We take a brief look at six '40s' that each in their own way offer something different, be they focused on coastal cruising or ocean crossing.

Shakedown cruise: Voyaging brings with it something special, explains Belize 52 owner Richard Barns, who recounts his shakedown cruise to the Whitsundays.
